Andrew Goudelock says he’s losing weight this offseason


With fans chanting his name, Lakers guard Andrew Goudelock performed something few have ever witnessed.

He dunked a basketball, a feat the 6-foot-2 Goudelock later joked he’s only done 15 times in his life. The significance went beyond the giddiness expressed by about 200 campers over Goudelock’s sudden hops during an appearance at Camp Lakers on Wedesday at the Roybal Learning Center. It also gave a snapshot on how Goudelock’s weight loss this offseason has helped him become more mobile.

Since the Lakers’ season ended a little more than a month ago, Goudelock said he has dropped from 215 pounds to 203 through various changes in his diet and workout routine.


“It’ll make me a litlte bit quicker and it’ll make me a little bit more explosive,” said Goudelock, who wants to weigh 195 pounds to open training camp. “I haven’t dunked in a long time because my legs didn’t feel up to it. But all of that has to do with what I’m eating and getting that extra weight off of me so I can move up a little bit faster and quicker.”

Whether that helps his chances on the Lakers exercising their $789,000 option on him isn’t fully clear. The Lakers likely won’t officially decide anything until Goudelock plays in the Las Vegas Summer League from July 13-22. But after Coach Mike Brown and General Manager Mitch Kupchak told Goudelock in his exit interview that he needs to work on his defense, ball handling and point-guard skills, the Lakers’ guard remained optimistic he will correct those issues enough and continue wearing purple & gold.

“Everything they’ve told me in the exit interview still stands unless something else is going on that I don’t know about,” Goudelock said. “They told me what they needed me to do and that’s what I’m trying to do. I’m always confident in what I do. You can’t really control what’s going to happen. All you can do is control what I do and try to get better every day.”

For Goudelock, that’s involved controlling his weight so it’s easier to improve his weaknesses. He’s switched his diet from late-night snacks to mostly fish and vegetables, and he even sends photographs to Lakers strength and conditioning coach Tom DiFrancesco for approval.

After visiting family in his hometown of Stone Mountain, Ga., and college friends at University of Charleston in South Carolina, Goudelock said he returned to Los Angeles June 16 and kept up a consistent workout routine.

By 9 a.m., Goudelock arrives at the Lakers’ training facility in El Segundo, working with either assistant coach Darvin Ham or player development coach Phil Handy on ball-handling and shooting drills. Goudelock then heads over to the Clippers’ facility in Playa Vista where he said pickup games routinely take place that include Blake Griffin, Paul George, Jeff Adrien, Tyson Chandler, Trevor Ariza and Christian Eyenga. After a weight-lifting session, Goudelock will then head to 24-hour Fitness to work on cardio.

“I’m coming along pretty well especially in the area of becoming a better point guard,” Goudelock said. “I’m making strides. I’m going to have to come a long way from where I want to be. But I’m in a pretty good position right now.”

That includes managing his weight.
