Nick Minnerath passes on Lakers’ training camp invite to play in Spain

University of Detroit Mercy forward Nick Minnerath will not be attending training camp with the Lakers, according to Dave Murphy of Forum Blue and Gold.

Minnerath reported on Twitter in August that he was invited by the Lakers to camp, but now the 6-foot-9 forward has chosen instead to play for Obradoiro CAB in the Spanish ACB League.

His original tweets showed his initial enthusiasm at the opportunity to play with the Lakers:

His actual chances to make the team, however, were slim -- the move to Spain was probably the right decision.

After signing forward Ryan Kelly on Friday, the Lakers have 16 players under contract, one more than the opening-night maximum of 15. Though only 12 of the 16 have fully guaranteed contracts, Minnerath wouldn’t have been a Laker for more than a few weeks.

The Lakers start the regular season Oct. 29 against the Clippers. It’s common for teams to bring 16 to 20 players to training camp before paring down the roster to 13 to 15.
