Nonshocker: Lakers shut out of all-defensive first, second teams

The NBA’s all-defensive first and second teams were named on Monday. Unsurprisingly, the Lakers were shut out of the voting.

Chris Paul (Clippers), Joakim Noah (Chicago Bulls), Paul George (Indiana Pacers), Serge Ibaka (Oklahoma City Thunder) and Andre Iguodala (Golden State Warriors) were named to the first team.

LeBron James (Miami Heat), Patrick Beverley (Houston Rockets), Jimmy Butler (Chicago Bulls), Kawhi Leonard (San Antonio Spurs) and Roy Hibbert (Pacers).

Of the 63 players who received consideration from the voting media, none were Lakers.

The Lakers finished the 2013-14 season with just 27 wins, allowing 109.2 points a game, second most overall behind the 19-63 Philadelphia 76ers.

Former coach Mike D’Antoni never had a reputation as a defensive-minded coach -- this season’s squad was a disaster.

Picking the team’s best defender isn’t easy -- perhaps reserve center Robert Sacre? Jodie Meeks may have been D’Antoni’s most valuable defender for continuous effort while guarding either backcourt position.

The Lakers hoped Wesley Johnson would be an impact defender. At times he would wow with steals and blocks but would also seemingly disappear for weeks at time.

Without a head coach or a final roster in place, it’s difficult to guess how well the Lakers will defend next season.
