Kobe Bryant announces August event to help eradicate homelessness

On Sunday night, Kobe Bryant announced “Kobe up Close,” an Aug. 15 charity event to be held at Nokia Theatre.

“I’d like to officially announce that I’m partnering with the Sports Spectacular to help eradicate homelessness,” said Bryant in a pre-recorded video, aired at the Sports Spectacular 2013 gala at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel.

“You can learn about my past, present and future,” said Bryant of the event, which will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. “It’s for an incredible cause.”

Sports Spectacular honored a number of sports figures on Sunday, including the late Dr. Jerry Buss, Chris Paul and Hope Solo. John Buss received the award on behalf of his father.

Speakers included former Lakers Jerry West, Michael Cooper, Elgin Baylor and Gary Payton.

In previous years, Sports Spectacular has honored David Beckham, Kevin Love, Blake Griffin, Carmelo Anthony and Baron Davis, among many others.

This proceeds to this year’s gala will benefit Cedars-Sinai Medical Genetics Institute.
