Summer Olympic federations prefer individual — not overall — bans on Russian athletes

With Olympic leaders considering whether to ban the entire Russian team from the 2016 Summer Games, the federations that represent each of the 28 sports in Rio de Janeiro seem to be leaning in a different direction.

The Assn. of Summer Olympic International Federations announced Tuesday that it favors dealing with the Russians on a case-by-case basis.

“It is important to focus on the need for individual justice in all these cases,” the organization said in a statement.

The World Anti-Doping Agency on Monday recommended a team-wide ban after releasing the latest in a series of reports alleging widespread cheating among Russian athletes, coaches and officials.

The executive board of the International Olympic Committee scheduled an emergency teleconference to discuss the matter Tuesday.

The WADA report alleged cheating in 20 of the Summer Olympic sports. The association of federations said it “recognizes the gravity and extent of the doping activities in Russia.”

“We also request WADA to immediately provide all the detailed information to the 20 international federations concerned so that they may begin processing the individual cases under their own separate rules and regulations as soon as possible,” the federations said.

The opening ceremony in Rio is scheduled for Aug. 5.
