Jennifer Fopma, Brooke Sweat win women’s AVP title
Fourth-seeded Jennifer Fopma, whose father played a season in the NBA with the Denver Nuggets, and Brooke Sweat rallied from a first-round loss to win the AVP Championship beach volleyball tournament in Huntington Beach on Sunday.
Fopma and Sweat beat third-seeded Brittany Hochevar and Lauren Fendrick, 21-9, 15-21, 15-9, in the championship match. The duo had to win six consecutive matches after the first-round loss and had no practice time because Fopma, who is 6 feet 3, has a back injury.
It was a service ace down the line from the 5-8 Sweat that was the final point of the tournament.
