NCAA and military launch concussion research
The NCAA and the Defense Department have launched what officials are calling the most comprehensive study of concussion and head-impact exposure ever conducted.
Researchers plan to follow an estimated 37,000 college athletes over a three-year period.
“NCAA schools have placed a priority on improved concussion management, but we still have many unanswered questions in this area,” NCAA President Mark Emmert said in a statement Thursday. “We believe in the incredible potential of this research.”
The results could benefit college athletes and the military, in which men and women suffer head injuries in the line of duty.
The NCAA and federal officials have earmarked $30 million to fund the research and to finance education about concussion awareness and detection.
