USC football: Cody Kessler and Max Wittek perform well in scrimmage

Quarterbacks Cody Kessler and Max Wittek both performed well Thursday as USC scrimmaged for the first time in preparation for its Aug. 29 opener at Hawaii.

Kessler and Wittek are competing to replace Matt Barkley, a competition that might not be decided until the week before the opener. The Trojans are scheduled to have two more scrimmages.

Kessler was first up and took the majority of his snaps with the first-team offense. Coach Lane Kiffin said that Wittek would start the next scrimmage.

Kessler led a 70-yard scoring drive in the first possession. He finished having completed 12 of 16 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown.

Wittek completed 13 of 20 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns, including a 70-yard strike to receiver Nelson Agholor.

Agholor caught eight passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns.

Running backs Silas Redd, Tre Madden and Ty Isaac sat out because of injuries. Freshman Justin Davis rushed for 32 yards in six carries, sophomore Javorius Allen 49 yards in 18 carries.
