Wrong anthem played for Uruguay at Copa America Centenario

Well, that was awkward.

Prior to the Copa America Centenario opening-round match between Mexico and Uruguay at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., on Sunday, the national anthem of Chile was played instead of Uruguay’s.

The Uruguayan players stood silently with blank stares as the wrong anthem was played.

Copa America released a statement via Twitter saying the mistake was due to “human error.”

Mexico went on to defeat Uruguay, 3-1.
