Kyle Busch wins yet again at Bristol

Kyle Busch can’t seem to lose at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Busch beat Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson off pit road after the final stops Sunday, then held them off over the closing 60 laps to win the Sprint Cup Series race at the Tennessee bullring. It gave Busch a sweep of the weekend — he won the second-tier Nationwide Series race Saturday — and his fifth consecutive victory at Bristol dating to a three-race sweep in August.

He has won five Cup races at Bristol, which ties him with older brother Kurt in NASCAR’s top series, and has 11 victories spanning the three national series.

Busch, who drives a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, dedicated the win to the manufacturer and its employees in Japan still trying to recover from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

Edwards settled for second and lamented not pushing Busch harder after the final restart with 37 laps remaining. Busch, Edwards and Johnson pulled away from the field, and Edwards had several opportunities to move Busch’s No. 18 Toyota out of the way.

Johnson, the defending race winner, finished third in his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.

Woodland tops Transitions

Gary Woodland earned his first PGA Tour victory after carding his only par on the back nine in the Transitions Championship at Palm Harbor, Fla.

Woodland surged into the lead with three straight birdies, fell back with consecutive bogeys and won with a 10-foot par on the final hole for a four-under 67 and a one-shot victory over Webb Simpson.

Simpson, playing in the group behind Woodland, was in a similar spot behind the 18th green. His chip went 20 feet by the hole and he failed to make the par putt. He closed with a 69.

Woodland became the first player to earn his first PGA Tour victory at Innisbrook. The win sends him to the Masters.

Karrie Webb rallied to win the LPGA Founders Cup for her second straight victory, shooting a six-under 66 to beat Brittany Lincicome and Paula Creamer by a stroke at Phoenix.

Webb won when Lincicome bogeyed the final hole, missing a 10-foot par putt.

The 36-year-old Hall of Fame member, the winner three weeks ago in Singapore, earned $200,000 for the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation and Japan relief efforts in the charity event at Wildfire Golf Club.

Webb has 37 LPGA tour victories. She finished at 12-under 204.

Lincicome shot a 70 and Creamer had a 66.

Texas Tech hires Gillispie

Texas Tech hired Billy Gillispie as its men’s basketball coach, two seasons after he was fired at Kentucky.

Gillispie will be introduced Wednesday at a news conference, school athletics spokesman Blayne Beal said. Gillispie replaces Pat Knight, who was fired this month.

In 2009, Kentucky fired Gillispie after the Wildcats were 40-27 in his two seasons and missed the NCAA tournament for the first time in 17 years.

New Jersey Nets guard Deron Williams will sit out at least two more games because of an injured right wrist, Coach Avery Johnson said.

Miami Heat point guard Mario Chalmers is expected to sit out up to two weeks after spraining his right knee.

Chalmers is averaging 6.6 points and 2.4 assists per game. He ranks fourth on Miami’s roster in scoring.

Odlanier Solis suffered serious knee injuries in his first-round knockout defeat by WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko on Saturday.

The 30-year-old Cuban was taken to a hospital, where a scan revealed tears to his anterior cruciate ligament and external meniscus, as well as cartilage damage in his right knee.

Juniper Pass, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, beat Dahoud by half a length in the $150,000 San Luis Rey Stakes, a turf race that was moved to the muddy main track on a rainy day at Santa Anita.
