UCLA, USC men’s basketball programs land recruits

The men’s basketball programs at UCLA and USC each received two letters of intent Wednesday as the NCAA’s fall early signing period opened.

UCLA secured the services of Kyle Anderson, a highly coveted 6-foot-8 swingman from Jersey City (N.J.) St. Anthony High, and 6-5 shooting guard Jordan Adams from Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy.

Coach Ben Howland said the Bruins could add another player in the early signing period and expected to bring in a total of four new players.

Howland said he expected Anderson would play point guard at times next season alongside Larry Drew II. Adams, the first player from Oak Hill Academy to sign with UCLA, can also play small forward.

USC signed J.T. Terrell from the junior college ranks and Strahinja Gavrilovic out of high school.

Terrell, a 6-3 guard, is a Wake Forest transfer who is playing at Peninsula College in Port Angeles, Wash. He averaged 11.1 points in 32 games as a freshman at Wake Forest, scoring at least 20 points three times with a high of 32.

Terrell left Wake Forest in September, just days after being charged with driving while impaired, according to a statement his attorney issued through the school.

Gavrilovic is a 6-8 forward from La Jolla Prep who played for Serbia’s under-18 team.

Reeves Nelson hobbling

UCLA forward Reeves Nelson sat out practice Wednesday because of an injured left ankle.

“We’re not even sure what it is,” Howland said. “It’s not an ankle sprain, it’s a part of his foot that he feels like was giving out on him all of a sudden.”

Howland said junior guard Kenny Jones would receive the Bruins’ available scholarship this season because he was the most likely walk-on to play.
