USC linebacker Cameron Smith was named Pac-12 Conference defensive player of the week, the conference announced Monday.

Smith, a freshman, intercepted three passes, returning one for a touchdown, in the Trojans’ 42-24 victory over Utah on Saturday at the Coliseum.

Smith intercepted two passes in the second quarter. He returned the first 41 yards to set up a short touchdown run by fullback Soma Vainuku.

He returned the second 54 yards for a touchdown that put USC ahead, 28-14.

Smith got his third interception with just under nine minutes left, and he returned it 27 yards.

Smith’s performance helped USC improve its record to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Pac-12 heading in Saturday’s game at California.
