Edmund Dantes is wrongly accused of a crime and thrown into prison at the Chateau d’If, a once-real prison just off the coast of Marseille in France. It is there that he plots his revenge. The book was published in serial from 1844 to 1845.
The old prison is open six days a week and offers regular tours. Every year, thousands of swimmers come to the prison and try to re-create Edmond’s escape in The Monte Cristo Challenge, racing through open water from the island of If to Marseille.
