On Dec. 31, some of the world’s most significant landmarks become emblazoned with lights and crowned with bursting fireworks. Some countries drop glass balls, others celebrate with tribal dances, and many even give a smooch. However people choose to celebrate the new year, the holiday provides a warm sense of unity in knowing that billions of other people are celebrating the exact same thing — albeit in different time zones.
