Hawaii: Kauai concert to celebrate half a century of gardens

Several of Hawaii’s best-known musicians will gather on Kauai on April 5 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of a group of tropical gardens.

The Kauai concert will be staged from 1-5 p.m. in a setting near the National Tropical Botanical Garden’s visitors center in Poipu.

“Musical Legends in the Garden” will include artists such as 13-time Grammy winner Jerry Douglas, who plays the dobro, a unique type of guitar known as a “resonator.” Also performing individually and together will be well-known island artists Led Kaapana, Mike Kaawa and Dennis Kamakahi.

The children’s choir from Ke Kula Niihau O Kekaha, a Kauai charter school at which students learn in the language of Niihau, Hawaii’s “Forbidden Island,” will also entertain.

The National Tropical Botanical Garden was created in 1964 by an Act of Congress to showcase the 90% of the world’s plant life that grows in the tropics. The non-profit organization has locations on Kauai, Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii as well as the Kampong in Coconut Grove, Fla.
