Iceland: Tour takes you into the landscape of ‘Game of Thrones’
Ever wanted to see the real Land Beyond the Wall from HBO’s “Game of Thrones”? In the series, it’s the great unknown. In reality, it’s northern Iceland, one of the locations where the fantasy TV show was filmed.
A five-day tour from EuropeToo takes you into “Thrones” country, known for its bloody dynasty struggles set amid spectacular scenery. Fan and local guide Jon Thor Benediktsson (he took the show’s crew around last year) spends a day showing the group places such as Godafoss, or Waterfall of the Gods, and the volcanic Lake Myvatn area where much of the third season was filmed.
Several locations are highlighted, including, for example, where the White Walkers attacked Samwell Tarly and Lord Commander Mormont and the cave where romance bloomed for Jon Snow and Ygritte. Even if you aren’t a “Thrones” fan, you’ll see plenty of volcanoes, lava formations, hot springs and bubbling mud pools.
The trip begins in capital Reykjavik and then goes to Akureyri, a fishing and port town in the north of less than 20,000 people. Participants meet local artists and designers during an art tour of the city and will have time to soak in the Myvatn Nature Baths and take the daylong Thrones tour.
To see the rest of the kingdom, you’ll have to visit Northern Ireland, Morrocco, Croatia, Malta and other places where filming has taken place.
