Gilroy Garlic Festival

When, where: July 25 to 27, Christmas Hill Park, 7100 Miller Ave.

Highlights: Heaps of garlicky fare (2 1/2 tons of garlic are used), arts and crafts, entertainment on three stages.

Cost: $12; ages 6 to 12, $6; 5 and younger, free.

MENDOCINO

Mendocino Music Festival

When, where: July 12 to 26 at Mendocino Headlands State Park.

Highlights: Classical, opera, bluegrass, jazz, tango and other music performed in a 16,000- square-foot, ocean-adjacent tent; some like to have pre-concert picnics on the headlands.

Cost: From $16 for an evening- concert youth ticket to $415 for the series of 12 concerts in the best-seat section of the tent.

OXNARD

Salsa Festival

When, where: July 26 and 27, Plaza Park, 5th and B streets.

Highlights: Salsa Tasting Tent with about 500 gallons of salsas, marketplace, salsa bands and dancing, loads of spicy fare.

SAN DIEGO

‘Water: BO=Life’

When, where: July 19 to Nov. 30, San Diego Natural History Museum, 1788 El Prado, Balboa Park.

Highlights: Billed as the only West Coast venue for the exhibition on the history and origin of water on Earth; geological specimens, live fish that leave water to venture onto land, a walk-through replica of a slot canyon, a special section on Southern California water issues.

Cost: $13; $8 ages 13 to 18; $7 ages 3 to 12.
