Weekend escape to Colorado Springs

An ornate spiral staircase is a centerpiece of the lobby at the Broadmoor. The staircase was refurbished to commemorate the resort’s 100th anniversary this year.

The current campus of The Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs is much larger than when founder Spencer Penrose built the first building in 1918. Centennial celebrations continue through the end of 2018.

Pikes Peak, at upper right, is seen from another natural attraction, the Garden of the Gods. The mountain inspired Katharine Lee Bates to pen the words for “America the Beautiful” during an 1893 visit to the region.

Spencer Penrose’s drinking glass eye on display at the Broadmoor. The hotel’s founder had two: one that was clear and one that was bloodshot that he would put in after he had been drinking.

A detailed scale model of the second Antlers Hotel, which towered over downtown Colorado Springs for decades, is displayed in the lobby of its modern-day replacement. Made entirely of Lego blocks, the replica is 4 feet long and 2 feet tall.
