How it rates * 1/2

New and noteworthy: A recent $4-million renovation modernized an urban hotel, and another refurbishing is scheduled this year.

The stay: Attracted to the location and reasonable (for L.A.) rates, business types, families and European tourists fill the 98 large rooms.

The scene: Quiet during the day except for cellphone addicts yakking through breakfast, lunch and dinner; dinnertime brings out lively locals.

Deal maker: La Terza, a top Italian restaurant with good prices and a better wine list.

Deal breaker: Though the rooms are large, amenities and ambience are meager.

Stats: 8384 W. 3rd St., Los Angeles; (800) 624-6835; www.theorlando.com.

Rooms: Brochure rates begin at $319.

Rating is based on the room, service, ambience and overall experience with price taken into account in relation to quality.
