Letters: Just for the record, keep those boarding passes, then shred them

Share

Regarding “Secret Information Trove?,” On the Spot, by Catharine Hamm, Dec. 17: I keep my paper boarding passes for about 18 months.

Here’s why: If I want the actual ticket number, the boarding pass has it at the bottom. I keep an electronic record in a file for each trip that includes the boarding pass, hotel and car reservations, and any insurance purchased, for future reference for two years.

This speeds the process if I have billing questions, kudos or complaints with any paid-for services.

After the 18 months, every paper file goes in the shredder.

Too much stuff is out there as it is, and I don’t want to make it easier for hackers.

I certainly agree about being able to get all the name information on the boarding pass or itinerary information. As long as the Transportation Security Administration is flexible enough to see that I match my passport information, I have been OK.
