Singer Jane Monheit

Not yet 30, jazz vocalist Jane Monheit has released five albums, most recently “Taking a Chance on Love.”

There’s a really interesting little place in Big Sur. I’ve only been there once, when I played the Monterey Jazz Festival in 2001, but it left a big impression. It’s a little restaurant and B & B called Deetjen’s. It’s a family-run, out-of-the-way place that’s been there for a million years.

It’s in this neat old house with flowers growing all over it, and inside it’s all candlelit with antiques everywhere. It’s not fancy, but really comfortable.

I’ve been to Ventana and the Post Ranch Inn and all those posh places in Big Sur, but Deetjen’s is wonderful because it has so much character.
