The onetime kingdom in Nepal’s Mustang region was once off limits to outsiders. Now you can hike and explore remote villages and monasteries in the northern Himalayan mountains during an 18-day tour — and save $1,000 on the price too.

The deal: Outdoor travel outfitter Mountain Travel Sobek of Emeryville, Calif., offers a $1,000 discount per person on two Mystical Mustang: Nepal’s “Forbidden Kingdom” trips.

The trek and cultural journey takes hikers into the what was once known as the independent Kingdom of Lo. The area was largely closed to visitors until 1991.

This tour includes 13 days of trekking to villages and mountain areas, including the 14th century walled city of Lo Manthang and the ancient cave monastery of Luri Gompa. Trip price (with the discount) starts at $4,995 per person.

When: Discounted trips run May 10 to 27 and Sept. 27 to Oct. 14.

Details: The deal is a good one, especially if you want a more remote trek in Nepal and if there are two in your party. The price doesn’t include $535 for internal airfares and a $550 per person permit fee. Also, solo travelers add $700 single supplement.
