England: ‘Downton Abbey’ lovers, see TV show’s estate and village
Tours of Highclere Castle near Newbury, England, have been in hot demand since the blockbuster “Downton Abbey” PBS series cast it as Lord Grantham’s gorgeous estate. With the TV show now in its fourth season, fans may be eager to see more “Downton” locations.
Liberty Travel is offering a three-day tour to London that combines Highclere Castle, the real-life home of Lord and Lady Carnarvon, with a visit to Bampton in Oxfordshire. Bampton is the village where church and street scenes for the “Masterpiece Classics” series have been filmed.
For example, the 12th century Romanesque church St. Mary the Virgin in Bampton is where where Lady Mary and Matthew married — and where Lady Edith got left at the altar. (It’s also the setting in the show’s first season where Edith tries to woo Matthew on an outing.) The tour also includes a visit to nearby Oxford.
When: Tour dates are April 16, Aug. 13 and 20, and Sept. 3 and 17.
Price: Starting at $1,915 per person, based on double occupancy. It includes round-trip airfare from New York, three nights at the K&K Hotel George in London, airport transfers and tours.
