More Southern Californians will be traveling over Thanksgiving weekend compared with last year, and most will be heading to Las Vegas and San Diego, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.

Despite the tight economy, 3.3 million Southern Californians -- an increase of 4.1% over 2010 -- will be on the move to visit family and friends on the holiday weekend. The Auto Club predicts a whopping 86%, or 2.8 million, will drive, 386,000 will fly and 91,000 will travel by other means.

So where’s everyone going? The Auto Club surveyed AAA travel agents and found the top five destinations to be Las Vegas, San Diego, San Francisco, the Grand Canyon and Anaheim (Disneyland).

“Those who have put off vacations all year, or maybe for a couple of years, are realizing they need to get away and they are finding ways to do it even on a tight budget,” Filomena Andre, the organization’s president, says in a statement.

About 5.3 million Californians and 42.5 million Americans are predicted to be traveling over Thanksgiving weekend.
