Squaw Valley, Boreal ski resorts welcome snow by opening early
Early season snow and the forecast of more on the way is making some California ski resorts a bit giddy. Squaw Valley near Lake Tahoe announced plans to open for four hours Thursday (today), ahead of its official opening next month, and Boreal Mountain Resort near Truckee plans to open for the season on Friday.
Squaw Valley, which received 3 feet of snow in storms over the last few days, will operate its Searchlight chair lift from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday. The cost is $20 per lift ticket; pass-holders are asked to make a $10 donation.
All proceeds from what’s billed as the Welcome Winter Fundraiser will go to the not-for-profit Squaw Valley & Alpine Meadows Ski Team Foundation. Squaw Valley’s official opening day is Nov. 21.
Boreal, north and west of Squaw Valley, will open one run with multiple terrain park features from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, according to its website. Lift tickets cost $15 for all ages. The resort plans to remain open Saturday and Sunday; $35 for adults and teens, $25 for children.
