Las Vegas: MGM properties introducing free Wi-Fi in public areas

MGM Resorts properties along the Las Vegas Strip are rolling out free Wi-Fi service throughout the low-rise public spaces of the resorts, from casinos to pools to restaurants.

Once the system is fully implemented, you will not need to get up from a slot machine or a blackjack table to check emails.

The technology is being installed in stages. It’s already up and running at Bellagio, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay and the Mirage. Service will be available later this year at Excalibur, Luxor, Monte Carlo and New York-New York.

The new service, catering to what’s being called the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) crowd, provides basic Internet access at no charge, with packages at various price points for those who need more bandwidth.

The software is customizable to allow for upgrades. For example, a “wayfinding” resort map – already available at Bellagio – will be introduced at other MGM Resorts properties later. This map provides visitors with step-by-step directions to various venues at the property.

Other features include promotional offers and the food and wine menus for Bellagio restaurants.

Overnight guests will still find hard-wired Internet connections in their rooms. Wireless connections will be available at MGM Grand by March, with other properties to follow. The cost is included in the hotels’ mandatory resort fees.

The free and widely available Wi-Fi for people passing through the MGM Resorts properties – whether to grab a drink, see a show, or play poker – is groundbreaking. Caesars Entertainment, the other big player in Las Vegas, offers Wi-Fi in the public areas at only some of its properties. And, where it is provided, fees – up to $24.99 a day – are charged.
