Las Vegas: ‘Spank,’ a ‘Fifty Shades’ spoof, to hit the Nugget’s stage

A parody of the wildly popular erotic novel “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which deals with bondage and bad-boy-good-girl romance, will make its way -- fittingly -- this fall to the stage in Las Vegas.

Spank! The Fifty Shades Parody” will be staged Oct. 18 to Nov. 9 at the Golden Nugget Las Vegas.

The production “brings all the naughty fun of the best-selling book to life [including] steamy and fun performances from the hunky leading man,” a news release says.

Like the book, the musical will probably appeal mostly to women.

“Spank! ... is a perfect blend of music, action and spicy humor that everyone from bachelorette parties to couples will enjoy,” Golden Nugget vice president Amy Chasey is quoted as saying in the release.

Chris Jones, theater critic for the Chicago Tribune, wasn’t as glowing in a review, based on the show’s run in the Windy City.

“ ‘Spank,’ which uses only three actors and a taped accompaniment, not only goes on forever (two acts!), but gets stuck in a disastrous middle ground by going after the book in a more obvious and juvenile way -- think overripe erotica -- and without employing any discernible satiric bite,” Jones wrote.

Tickets cost $35 to $55. They can be purchased online or by calling (866) 946-5336.

The show is not a collaboration with E.L. James, the author of the novel. The production’s website makes that clear. ‘ “Spank!’ is not associated with, nor authorized by, author E.L. James or Vintage Press,” it says.
