Cruises: American Empress steamboat will ply Snake and Columbia rivers
The Empress of the North riverboat, which was pulled from service when its former operator, Majestic America Line, went out of business in 2008, will again ply the rivers of the Pacific Northwest.
The five-deck, 223-passenger vessel was recently bought by the Memphis-based American Queen Steamboat Co. and renamed the American Empress. Next year it will begin cruising the Columbia and Snake rivers between its home port, Portland, Ore., and Clarkson, Wash. Among the ports of call will be Astoria and the Dalles in Oregon and Sacajawea State Park in Washington. Highlights include the Columbia River Gorge and historic sites of the 19th century Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Dates: Frequent departures April 5 through Nov. 8, 2014, alternating between eastbound and westbound itineraries.
Price: From $3,795 a person, double occupancy. (Discounts may be available for voyages that are booked and paid in full by Aug. 31.) The price includes a one-night hotel stay before departure on an eight-day cruise; onboard meals; wine and beer with dinner and nonalcoholic beverages throughout the voyage; daily lectures and evening entertainment; and shore excursions as listed. It does not include port charges of $109 a person, gratuities, optional premium shore tours, airport transfers or airfare to or from passengers’ home cities.
