Daily Deal: Santa Monica’s Georgian hotel (and speakeasy) turn 80

The Art Deco Hotel Georgian in Santa Monica was built in the aftermath of the Depression and opened in October 1933. The city was a fashionable seaside resort, and the wealthy ponied up to stay there despite the bad times (the hotel’s Prohibition-era speakeasy was a draw too). Now the hotel celebrates its 80th year with a package that comes with valet parking and other extras. And yes, you can still buy a drink at the Speakeasy Bar.

The deal: The Landmark Package includes a room plus two hours of bicycle rentals at nearby Perry’s, free valet parking for one vehicle, and a brochure for a self-guided history tour of Santa Monica. The hotel at 1415 Ocean Ave. faces Santa Monica State Beach and is a short distance from the pier.

The hotel also is throwing an Anniversary Affair on Oct. 16 to raise money for the nonprofit Santa Monica Conservancy. Tickets cost $100 each (no, those don’t come with the room), and all proceeds go to the conservancy. In addition, the hotel will match up to $5,000 in donations made to the conservancy by its guests through the end of the year.

When: The offer is good through Dec. 30.

Tested: The amenities that come with this package are valued at about $65 for a single night’s stay. I checked online and found availability for Nov. 1 to 3 (weekend) for $274 per night for a room with one queen-sized bed or $279 per night for a room with two queen-sized beds (prices exclude tax).

Best available rates for the same rooms on the same nights run about $20 less, but you still come out ahead with the package -- provided you take advantage of parking and cycling.
