Pope John Paul II

Share

The late Pope John Paul II will be canonized at the Vatican. The outspoken but widely beloved Pole was the first non-Italian to become pope in more than 400 years when he was elected in 1978. After his death in 2005, the effort by followers to have him declared a saint began immediately. Vatican authorities have deemed him responsible for curing a French nun of Parkinson’s disease and healing a Costa Rican woman of an aneurysm.
