A 47-year-old man from suburban La Mesa is suspected of kidnapping, sexually assaulting and killing a 13-year-old Arkansas girl that he contacted while posing as a teenager in an Internet chat room, police in Arkansas said Friday.

Authorities in Conway, Ark., a suburb of Little Rock, said that David Fuller fatally shot Kacie Rene Woody and then himself as police arrived at a storage facility in search of the girl. The two bodies were found in a space rented by Fuller, a former car salesman.

The girl, the daughter of a police officer, was reported missing Tuesday from the family home. The home showed signs of forced entry and a struggle, officials said.

The girl had left without her shoes, another sign of abduction, officials said.

“We tried desperately to get Miss Woody back to her family but we were unable,” Faulkner County Sheriff Marty Montgomery said.

In San Diego, FBI agents searched Fuller’s home and seized several boxes of items, including a computer.

An FBI spokeswoman said agents are trying to determine if Fuller is linked to other crimes involving children.

Court records show that Fuller’s wife filed for divorce in July and asked that he attend anger management classes. He was fired from a car dealership after he was discovered looking at pornography on a company computer, officials said.

He was once arrested on suspicion of domestic violence but the case was dropped for lack of evidence, officials said.

Neighbors said that Fuller left home last week without giving a reason or location. Conway Police Maj. Mark Elsinger said Fuller went to Arkansas “on a scouting mission. There appeared to be a lot of planning in this. You don’t just arrive from San Diego.”

In Arkansas, Fuller contacted the girl by telephone and continued to pretend that he was a teenager, officials said.
