It really is supercalifragilistic

WITH no disrespect toward Walt Disney intended, Howard Hatfield may just live in the happiest place on Earth. This massive fun palace in Agoura is pure, joyous Disney.

Just don’t try to describe it.

It’s not a contemporary; it’s not modern; it’s not particularly architectural.

“I’d go with wacky,” said Hatfield, the owner-architect-builder. But wacky in a good way.

Walls are curved, sloped and tilted. Colors dance in the sunlight. And at any given moment, you expect to hear “It’s a Small World” coming from the wall speakers.

It’s a cacophony of ever-changing colors and shapes. “We keep painters very happy,” Hatfield said. And apparently, others as well.

“Most people who visit tell me that they leave here feeling good,” Hatfield said. “I guess it’s Disney for adults.”

The 3,300-square-foot great room is indeed pretty great, with 27-foot-high ceilings in a wall-less space.

Seven-foot-high room dividers separate the different living spaces -- which include the gourmet kitchen, the pool table area, the wine sipping area, the complete bar and the conversation groupings. In some cases, the dividers -- like the 800-pound glass block partition -- move freely on wheels. Twelve-foot rosewood slate columns are also mobile.

The great room floor is acid-washed concrete. Ceilings are a mixture of materials, including corrugated metal in one area.

One wall has a built-in 640-bottle wine cooler and storage. “We call it the WOW wall, you know, wall of wine,” Hatfield said.

About this house: The whimsical manse, with four bedrooms and six bathrooms, was built in 2001. This is the 56th custom home that Hatfield designed; 40 of them have been built.
