Denzel Washington to return to Broadway in ‘A Raisin in the Sun’

It’s official: Denzel Washington will return to Broadway in a revival of “A Raisin in the Sun.”

The theater world has been buzzing that the Oscar winner would star in an upcoming production of Lorraine Hansberry’s prize-winning drama.

The actor confirmed the rumors at the New York premiere of his comedy “2 Guns,” the Wall Street Journal reported.

While plugging the film “Flight” last year, Washington said he was planning to return to Broadway in 2014, with Kenny Leon directing and Scott Rudin producing.

This would reunite the trio after the successful revival of “Fences,” which earned Washington a Tony in 2010.

Washington didn’t reveal his role in “A Raisin in the Sun,” but reports have swirled he’ll play the lead role of Walter Lee Younger.

Just shy of 60, Washington is twice the age of most actors who play the haunted hero. (Sidney Poitier was in his early 30s when he originated the role on stage in 1959 and in the 1961 film.)

“A Raisin in the Sun” was last seen on Broadway in the 2004 Leon-helmed revival starring Phylicia Rashad, Audra McDonald and Sean “Diddy” Combs as Walter Lee Younger.

Washington also has appeared on Broadway in “Julius Caesar” and “Checkmates.”
