Emmy Awards 2014 red carpet: Here’s what happened, as it happened

4:49 p.m.: Joe Morton, known as Papa Pope on "Scandal," said he'd be rooting for his on-screen daughter Monday night.

"I really hope Kerry [Washington] wins tonight," he said on the red carpet.

As for "Scandal," Morton said there's "no show like it."

"It's very character driven," he said, adding that show creator and executive producer "Shonda Rhimes is a genius."

Mark Burnett's beard recalls 2013 nominee 'The Bible'

4:38 p.m.: Mark Burnett wasn't at the Emmys in 2013 to support his miniseries "The Bible," which was nominated for three statues last year. But he seemed to be channeling Moses with a scraggly gray beard he said he'd started growing 16 weeks ago, on the first day of Lent.

"I think it's rugged and sexy," said his wife, Roma Downey, tugging at his facial hair. "And I can tell it gives him a sense of freedom."

'Mad Men' creator Matt Weiner gets sentimental about the series

4:32 p.m.: "Mad Men" creater Matt Weiner said he hasn't seen most of the show's cast members since filming wrapped in July.

"I just saw the editor's version of the finale, and that was weird," he said.

Though the final season will be split into two parts, Weiner said it's still sentimental being at the Emmys, where three of the show's performers are up for acting awards.

"The last couple of days of filming were very emotional," he said. "I wrote the pilot 14 years ago. This a third of my life so far."

Julianna Margulies triumphs over L.A.'s rush-hour traffic

4:18 p.m.: "I was so nervous about getting here," said Julianna Margulies of "The Good Wife," who's nominated for lead actress in a drama. It's her fourth Emmy Award nomination for her work on the show; she won in 2011.

"Everyone was sending me articles about how bad it was going to be this year. But I got a golf cart ride so I didn't have to [walk] in heels, and it's not that hot. It's so mellow! I'm very relieved."

Laverne Cox of 'Orange Is the New Black' is living the dream

3:55 p.m.: For Laverne Cox, from "Orange is the New Black," being at the Emmy Awards was surreal.

"These are dreams I planted for myself many years ago ... a black transsexual from Alabama is at the Emmys.... I am grateful every single day."

Cox was nominated for guest actress in a comedy, losing out to costar Uzo Aduba during the Creative Arts Emmys presentation on Aug. 16.

As for Season 3 of the women-in-prison show?

"Ooh it's juicy."

'Better Call Saul' fans already approaching Bob Odenkirk

3:30 p.m.: The debut of the "Breaking Bad" spinoff "Better Call Saul" is months away, but Bob Odenkirk says fans are already approaching him in anticipation.

"Everyone from cab drivers to the guy at customs who told me his sister in Romania loved Saul," said Odenkirk, who played morally flexible lawyer Saul Goodman on the meth-making drama and will reprise the role in the spinoff. "I don't think all of the 'Breaking Bad' fans are with me, but most of them are."

'Orange Is the New Black's' Kate Mulgrew: 'Great' to be nominated

3:19 p.m.:There may be a lot of tense moments among the characters on Netflix's "Orange Is the New Black," but cast members had only love for one another on the Emmys red carpet Monday.

"You look beautiful, Kate," cast member Lea DeLaria, who plays Boo, told Kate Mulgrew (Red).

Mulgrew said of being Emmy-nominated, "How do you think it feels? Great!"

Playing Red has been "a complete rush," she said.

"How she resides with me I don't know, but when I tap within me she just comes out," Mulgrew said of her character.

'You can pet me,' says a velvet-clad Allison Janney

3:15 p.m.: "You can pet me," Allison Janney said as she approached reporters on the Emmys red carpet Monday. Her dress, a velvet magenta number by Nicolas Jebran, was begging to be touched. It looked soft -- like the kind of material that might line a fancy pillow.

Janney, a "Masters of Sex" cast member, was well-versed on her outfit; she'd settled on it after trying on 30 dresses, and her publicist had brought a rack of 200 over to her home.

"Beyonce wore this designer last night," she bragged. "So I'm on point."

Rico Rodriguez of 'Modern Family' is selfie-ready

3:03 p.m.: Rico Rodriguez, who plays Manny on "Modern Family," said it's good to be back at the Emmys.

"We just finished Week 3 of filming," the young star said on the red carpet. "It's fun to be here and see all your old friends."

With his cellphone in his back pocket, Rodriguez said he's ready to take selfies.

He's especially excited to see the cast of "Breaking Bad" again.

'Good Wife' nominee Christine Baranski still gets nervous

2:57 p.m.: Christine Baranski has been to the Emmys 12 times but never before had she come dressed in theme.

"I wanted to look like the Chrysler Building," she said, pointing to her long sapphire and diamond earrings. "I know what to expect here now, but anyone who tells you they're not nervous before they call your name is lying."

As for her plans to wind down after the show? Binge watching will not be included.

"I plan to do that later on in my life," said the 11-time Emmy nominee, who's up for supporting actress in a drama series this year. "When I'm not working I have to learn lines."

'Breaking Bad' actor R.J. Mitte spent morning with fans

2:54 p.m.:Earlier today, R.J. Mitte, who played Walt Jr. on Emmy-nominated "Breaking Bad," was waiting for fans of the show at the IHOP on Santa Monica and La Cienega boulevard.

"There were fans there within 30 seconds of Aaron [Paul] posting on Instagram," Mitte said on the carpet. He was part of the first clue in a social-media scavenger hunt for fans that was arranged by Paul last week and wrapped up around 1 p.m. Monday.

"Tons of fans came through in the half hour I was there," Mitte said. "I gave them posters."

The AMC show, which won three Emmys last year, including drama series, has a shot at many more tonight.

"It's our last hurrah," Mitte said.

'House of Cards' is 'old hat'? So says Dana Brunetti

2:34 p.m.: Last year, everyone on the Emmys red carpet was buzzing about Netflix's addition to the awards show. This time around?

"We're old hat now," joked Dana Brunetti, an executive producer on "House of Cards." "When we were first announced, people thought we were crazy; now those same people are asking, 'How do I get my show on Netflix?'"

Emmys are just as glamorous held on a Monday

2:15 p.m.: It seemed odd: men in tuxedos, women in fake eyelashes and a red carpet rolled out in downtown Los Angeles, all just after lunch.

The Emmys might be on a Monday for the first time in 40 years, but the red carpet was as glamorous as ever.

Before celebrities stepped out of their limos, models carrying Fiji water glided down the carpet in their gowns, distributing bottles to sweaty reporters.

Though NBC this year placed a scrim and fans above the carpet to shield people from the sun, television hosts still powdered their faces and fanned themselves with credentials to keep cool.

2 p.m.: Before the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards begin Monday, the stars will of course hit the red carpet outside L.A. Live's Nokia Theatre, where the media are in place and anticipation is high. And luckily, the sun wasn't beating down quite as brutally as it often does this time of year in Los Angeles.

When do the 2014 Emmys start? With Seth Meyers of "Saturday Night Live" and "Late Night With Seth Meyers" fame at the helm, they start at 5 p.m. on the West Coast, with the red-carpet arrivals beginning at 2 p.m. and really getting rolling by the end of the 2 o'clock hour and beyond, right up until showtime.

Keep your eyes open for stars from the drama-series contenders, "Breaking Bad," "Game of Thrones," "Mad Men," "Downton Abbey," "True Detective" and "House of Cards," as well at the comedic folks from comedy-series nominees "The Big Bang Theory," "Louie," "Modern Family," "Orange Is the New Black," "Silicon Valley" and "Veep." Individual performers from loads of other shows will hit the carpet as well.
