‘Welcome to Showside’ is a perfectly weird horror short from Ian McGinty

Looks like Modern Prometheus has handed out an early Halloween treat.

Just in time for International Animation Day, the production company has released its debut animated short, “Welcome to Showside,” from creator Ian McGinty, an artist and writer known for his work on “Adventure Time,” “Bravest Warriors” and “Munchkin” comics.

In addition to serving as the showrunner and voice of Kit for the animation, McGinty is making his creator-owned comics debut with “Welcome to Showside.” The first issue of the all-ages series from sister company Z2 Comics is out Wednesday.

“Welcome to Showside” follows the adventures of Kit, a loveable kid with a monster of a secret — literally. His father is the Great Shadow King, the Ruler of the Nexus (which appears to be some sort of demon dimension), who wants Kit to take over the family business of destroying the world.

The animated short also introduces viewers to Kit’s friends Moon, a sorceress in training, and Belle, a demon hunter.

“It amazes me that people can finally see what I have been watching in my brain for so long,” McGinty said in a news release. “The ‘Welcome to Showside’ animated short takes place in the same world as the comic but has new characters — like the giant flaming skull demon voiced by the super-awesome Henry Rollins.”

Yes, the animated short features a giant flaming skull demon who is tasked with killing Kit and his friends. We don’t want to spoil everything, but let’s just say his method involves “little baby worm creatures that eat your face and stuff.” It’s pretty weird and pretty great.

Both the animated short and comic-book series launch is sponsored by geek and gamer brand J!NX.
