The revenge comedy “The Other Woman” is on its way to topping the box-office charts this weekend, the first film to surpass the Marvel sequel “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” since that film’s release.

Directed by Nick Cassavetes and starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton, “The Other Woman” was greeted with mostly negative reviews, including one critic for National Public Radio who called the film “a conceptually odious, stupid-to-the-bone enterprise.” But that didn’t dissuade audiences, who came out to give the film an estimated $9.3 million on its opening night.

At that pace, the movie could exceed the $18 million it was expected to collect in its first weekend, according to those who have seen prerelease audience surveys.

“The Winter Soldier,” which has taken in upward of $210 million domestically since its release April 4, was on track for second place this weekend with $4.4 million on Friday, according to estimates. The film could add another $15 million by the weekend’s close.

Another film premiering this week, the Paul Walker-led action film “Brick Mansions,” opened on track for fourth place on Friday, bringing in an estimated $3.5 million. One of the last movies to feature the late actor, the film was written by Luc Besson and was considered likely to open with $8 million.

Rounding out the top five, the religious-themed film “Heaven Is Real” brought in an estimated $4 million to place it on track for third place, while the animated sequel “Rio 2” lands in fifth place heading into Saturday with an estimated $3.2 million.
