It pays to play the hits.

Just ask Top 40 station KIIS-FM (102.7), which on Monday finished No. 1 in the Arbitron radio ratings for Los Angeles-Orange County for the third month in a row by featuring the music of such pop stars as Katy Perry, One Direction, Miley Cyrus, Pitbull, Lady Gaga and Imagine Dragons.

The station averaged a 5.4% share of the audience, according to the survey of listeners ages 6 and older between Oct. 10 and Nov. 6. More than 3.8 million people tuned in for at least five minutes each week.

KBIG-FM (104.3), which features many of the same artists as KIIS, was No. 2 for the third month in a row, with 5.3% of the audience, followed by hip-hop outlet KPWR-FM (105.9) and Top 40 KAMP-FM (97.1), tied with 4.3%, and oldies station KRTH-FM (101.1) with 4.2%.

The market’s top-rated morning DJ for the sixth month straight was Ricardo “El Mandril” Sanchez of regional-Mexican music station KLAX-FM (97.9), who captured 5.6% of the audience. Kevin Ryder and Gene “Bean” Baxter of KROQ-FM (106.7) were second with 4.9%.

Elsewhere in the ratings: KFI-AM (640) continued its reign as the market’s top-rated talk station, finishing in a tie for ninth overall; all-news KNX-AM (1070) was 11th; country music station KKGO-FM (105.1) was tied for 17th; and KPCC-FM (89.3) was the top-rated noncommercial station, tied at No. 21, just ahead of classical music outlet KUSC-FM (91.5) at No. 23.

PHOTOS: Musicians’ onstage snafus

Although the ratings have been quite stable for the last three months, change is likely the next time out now that adult-contemporary music outlet KOST-FM (103.5) has made its annual shift to a playlist featuring holiday tunes exclusively. The station tied for sixth place with KLAX in the ratings released Tuesday but in recent years has jetted to the top of the chart when it starts filling its airwaves with songs such as “White Christmas,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Frosty the Snowman” and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”
