Talk station KFI-AM (640) edged past KIIS-FM (102.7) in the August radio rankings, dethroning the Top 40 outlet that had topped the charts since January, the Arbitron ratings service reported Wednesday.

KFI moved up from second place in July, increasing its share of the Los Angeles-Orange County audience from 4.4% to 4.9%, while KIIS dipped slightly, from 4.8% to 4.7%, according to the survey of listeners 6 and older, which ran from July 23 to Aug. 19.

Adult-contemporary station KOST-FM (103.5) and oldies station KRTH-FM (101.1) tied for third at 4.2%. Rounding out the top five was KCBS-FM (93.1), increasing its audience share from 3.7% to 4%.

KFI previously tied with KLVE-FM for the No. 1 spot in the spring of 2006, the first time since 1987 that an AM station in L.A. could stake a claim to top-dog status. This time around it has the lead all to itself, thanks to a strong showing across the weekday schedule -- first in the mornings, third at midday, second in the afternoons, sixth in the evening.
