Shopping: Zanerobe sportswear comes to L.A.

Share

Zanerobe, the University of Sport, brings beachy Australian style to these shores this year with a sportswear collection for men, women and children based on weekend basics such as T-shirts, tanks and boardshorts.

In 2002, Jonathan “Jono” Yeo, 35, and Leith Testoni, 33, founded Sydney-based Zanerobe after wagering over beers that they could make a shirt better than a “hideous” striped button-down that some guy paraded in front of them at a neighborhood pub. Yeo and Testoni named their fledgling collection Zanerobe, a combination of the name Zane – a nickname Testoni wished he had – and “robe” from “garde-robe,” which is French for wardrobe. Since neither Yeo nor Testoni had a design background – both worked in financial institutions — they tested the design waters with graphic T-shirts, which caught on Down Under.

In the last eight years, Yeo and Testoni have expanded Zanerobe from T-shirts to denim, suits, swimwear and accessories. In 2009, they launched women’s and children’s collections. In August, Yeo and Testoni plan to introduce a Zanerobe eyewear collection based on classic styles such as aviator sunglasses that will be available for purchase on the brand’s website.

Zanerobe’s graphic T-shirts have a vintage European sports team feel with faux slogans in French, Italian, Spanish and Latin. This season, a T-shirt featuring the graphic “IIFA” (a kind of riff on FIFA that stands for the fictional Inter Italia Federecia Athletique) is a bestseller. Other popular styles recall classic U.S. collegiate fonts and slogans. The brand’s T-shirts and boardshorts are $70; tanks are $50.

“Zanerobe is quirky and not too design-oriented,” Yeo says, speaking by phone from Sydney. He says that the company uses vibrant color on its T-shirts to make them stand out. Zanerobe’s graphics are done in-house by a six-person team. Yeo says that Zanerobe’s sportswear is the opposite of what happens when big-name designers do casual and the result is “too cool for school when it’s meant to be fun.”

Zanerobe is available at LASC, 8592 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood. (310) 657-2858. 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
