Gift pick No. 27: Tanya Aguiniga weavings, rope baskets
If Beatrice Wood was the Mama of Dada, then Tanya Aguiñiga surely qualifies as the patron saint of the Los Angeles modern craft movement.
From the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York to Dwell on Design in L.A., from the Crafting Community event in Palm Springs to the Arts ReStore LA project in Westwood, Aguiñiga’s presence in the design world this year has been constant, as she showcased her handcrafted furniture, accessories and site-specific installations.
Aguiñiga’s lovely wall hangings and baskets made from 100% cotton rope are the latest picks for our Handmade Holidays gift guide.
Using weaving and macrame techniques, Aguiñiga makes the dyed wall hangings by hand in her Atwater Village studio. Prices range from $500 to $900.
Hand-knit cotton baskets come in three sizes ($100 to $220) and are dip-dyed in a variety of colors. Cotton knot rope bracelets, long a part of her repertoire, are $85.
The work is sold through the Aguiñiga Studio online store, ReForm School, Hammer Museum store and A+R.
