Dodgers’ Justin Turner says pinkie is fine after being hit by pitch

Justin Turner flexed his left hand, flexed it again. Almost like he wanted to reassure himself all was well. He is, after all, the Dodgers’ only real third baseman.

Turner was hit by a Mike Leake pitch in the sixth inning Wednesday. He spun and grabbed his hand, but remained in the game.

“It got the tip of my pinkie and didn’t have feeling in it for a couple of innings, but I took some X-rays right away and everything’s good,” Turner said.

The X-rays were taken during the game, but Turner said he was confident the pinkie would be all right and he would be in the lineup Thursday in San Diego.

“It was numb but I knew right away there wasn’t anything broken,” he said.

The Dodgers have no true backup third baseman. Enrique Hernandez started Sunday, but strained a hamstring and went on the disabled list. The Dodgers are giving work at third to second basemen Chase Utley and Jose Peraza. Alex Guerrero has played third, but the Dodgers seem to have lost confidence in him, probably both as a fielder and a hitter.

Turner wasn’t the only player the Dodgers had to be concerned about after their 2-1 victory over the Giants.

Andre Ethier also said he was OK after fouling a ball off his left knee in the second inning. Ethier said it ricocheted off his kneecap. He stood when hands on his knees a long time before resuming his at-bat, but he too finished in the game.

“I’m fine,” Ethier said.
