Racing! Here’s wishing everyone the happiest of holidays

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we look at holiday gifts to give to racing.

I asked you folks to come up with some holiday gifts for people in the racing industry and, as always, you came through. I tried to use as many as I could, but despite my near-begging, some of you didn’t include your names. (And remember, having it in the email isn’t enough because — this may come as a shock — some folks’ email doesn’t use their real name.)

And, as usual, if more than one of you had the same idea, I went with the first one received.

So here you go:

From Carolyn Sherry: “To Santa Anita, new fireproof barns for the safety of the horses and workers that live back there.”

Andy Mosley: “To the survivors of the Southern California fires, both equine and others, comfort and solace, and maybe blankets too.”

James Sheperd: “To Tim Ritvo and Santa Anita, great weather and safe racing surfaces for the beginning of the Santa Anita meet so they can see if the changes they are making increase field sizes and handle.”

Jeff Prupis: “To the racing fans of the Los Angeles area, our beloved Hollywood Park back.”

Tim Robertson: “To Arrogate, one more race in the Pegasus so that he can prove that his recent sub-par performances were entirely due to his dislike of the Del Mar racing surface.”

Jim Favors: “To Bob Baffert, a horse that makes it to the Kentucky Derby this year.”

Fred Hoyt: “To the connections of Zenyatta, one (or both) of her two foals to win a race before the Medaglia D’Oro foal begins racing next year.”

Larissa Grashian: “To Del Mar, another Breeders' Cup. They really pulled it off better than I ever could have imagined.”

John Boudreau: “To Southern California horseplayers, $.50 pick threes, through all of California racing.”

(And now wandering outside of Southern California.)

Larry Kerr: “To Belinda and Frank Stronach, a full, competitive field of 12 horses ready to do battle in the Pegasus World Cup.

Dennis McGarry: “To Jerry Simms, owner of Turf Paradise, give him a smile. He always walks around the track looking like Scrooge, when he should be laughing all the way to the bank.”

Debra Gilbert: “To the Pennsylvania racing authorities, a spine.”

Ray Rittenhouse: “To Illinois racing fans, a functioning government in Illinois that will pass and sign legislation to allow slot machines at race tracks, and provide other purse relief, to save Arlington Park.”

(And finally…)

John Cherwa: “To TVG, a week off from me posting your Sunday results.”

(Although, it would be really unfair not to mention Ron Ellis, one of their best, hitting a pick-five for $190.70 on a $36 bet at Los Alamitos.)

Los Alamitos review

The Lieutenant won the final feature of this Los Al meet by taking the $48,000 allowance optional claimer race over a mile. The colt rallied from last to win by a half-length over the morning-line favorite, Hot Sean. He paid $7.00, $4.00 and $3.20 for trainer Michael McCarthy and jockey Drayden Van Dyke. Rocko’s Wheel finished third.

Trainers Bob Baffert and Doug O’Neill tied with 14 wins for the three Los Alamitos meets. Evin Roman was the top jockey with 18 wins.
