Water main break in Burbank causes sinkhole, closes roads

Water rushing from a broken main under a parking lot at a Burbank Fire Department training center late Tuesday afternoon caused a partial collapse of the asphalt, authorities said.
The broken water main is at 1845 N. Ontario Street. The Fire Department reported the incident about 5:15 p.m.
Burbank Police Lt. Matthew Ferguson said officers at the scene estimated the sinkhole is at least a foot deep and four cars wide.
Firefighters haven’t been able to locate the source of the break. Water is running into the street and seeping into the yards of nearby homes.
Police officers have blocked off access to Ontario and Fairview streets intersecting with Pacific Avenue and Victory Boulevard. Ferguson said it’s unclear how long the streets will remain closed.
The Fire Department will oversee any cleanup, Ferguson said.
It’s unknown what caused the main to burst.
