Earthquake: 3.1 quake recorded south of Eureka

A shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported Monday morning nine miles from Rio Dell in Northern California, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor was recorded at 1:12 a.m., seven minutes after a 3.5 quake in the same area.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was 16 miles from Fortuna, 30 miles from Eureka and 32 miles from Bayside.

In the past 10 days, there have been two earthquakes magnitude 3.0 and greater centered nearby.
