CALIFORNIA BRIEFING / SACRAMENTO

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Tulare) said Friday that California’s GOP standard-bearer, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, should step down for his “failure to respond to the ongoing California water crisis.”

Nunes sent out his statement on the day Schwarzenegger appeared at San Luis Reservoir in Merced County for the last stop of a march organized by the Latino Water Coalition. The governor this week also held a news conference with Interior Secretary Ken Salazar for the announcement of millions in federal funding for California’s water infrastructure.

“Congressman Nunes’ attempt to grab headlines with finger pointing will not solve this problem and will only lead to the same gridlock that has paralyzed the water debate in this state for the last 50 years,” said Schwarzenegger spokesman Matt David. “We encourage Congressman Nunes to be part of the solution as opposed to part of the problem.”

Though the governor has repeatedly called for action on a variety of measures to deal with the problem, Nunes said Schwarzenegger’s similar remarks at the water march were “lip service.”
