Parolee dies after deputies shoot him with stun gun

A 48-year-old man died early Saturday after being shot with an electric stun gun by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies after he allegedly attacked and threatened to kill them, authorities said.

Two deputies were patrolling the area near Firestone Boulevard and the 5 Freeway in La Mirada just before 1 a.m. when they approached two men with a dog standing behind a pickup truck in the parking lot of the Extended Stay America hotel, said Lt. Pat Nelson of the Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau.

One of the men elbowed one of the deputies and tried to knock the other down before running away, Nelson said. Deputies chased him through the parking lot as he zigzagged between parked cars and appeared to reach for his waistband, leading them to believe he was armed.

He attacked the deputies a second time, knocking each of them to the ground, and tried to disarm one of them during the struggle, according to authorities. The deputies said the man threatened to kill them. One of the deputies shot him with a Taser to subdue and handcuff him.

Moments later, the man became unresponsive and deputies administered CPR until paramedics arrived. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The man, who has not been identified pending notification of his family, was a parolee who had served time for narcotics charges, vehicular manslaughter and evading arrest, investigators said.

They said he was in possession of what appeared to be heroin and methamphetamine at the time of the incident. No weapon was recovered.
