The headline on the final print edition of the Tucson Citizen newspaper said it all: “Our epitaph.”
The closure of the 138-year-old Citizen makes Tucson the latest two-newspaper town to lose one of its dailies. The Citizen published in the afternoon while the Arizona Daily Star has appeared mornings.
In January, the newspaper’s publisher, Gannett Co., said it would cease publishing unless a buyer was found for the financially troubled paper.
On Friday, Arizona Atty. Gen. Terry Goddard’s office filed a motion seeking to halt the closure, contending that Gannett and Lee Enterprises, publisher of the Arizona Daily Star, had violated antitrust statutes by agreeing to close the Citizen.
