Haven’t they picked a dog yet? Almost
Never mind the economy, or Gaza, or Iran. The real news out of Sunday’s ABC interview with President-elect Barack Obama is the answer to the question that Obama’s daughters, Sasha and Malia, planted with George Stephanopoulos:
What kind of dog, and when?
It’ll probably either be a Labradoodle or a Portuguese water hound, Obama replied -- revealing that he still had a little homework to do.
The Portuguese water dog is a pedigreed pup. “Known for centuries along Portugal’s coast,” the American Kennel Club notes, “this seafaring breed was prized by fishermen for a spirited yet obedient nature, and a robust, medium build that allowed for a full day’s work in and out of the water.”
The Labradoodle, a mix of Labrador retriever and poodle, is a designer hybrid not recognized by the AKC -- at least not yet.
The Obamas are looking in Washington-area shelters.
