Rodman pleads no contest
Dennis Rodman, the former NBA star, pleaded no contest Tuesday to misdemeanor charges of spousal battery and was sentenced to three years’ probation, Los Angeles city attorney officials said.
The plea in Los Angeles County Superior Court means that Rodman, well-known for his off-court antics as well as his all-star rebounding, will be bagging trash instead of talking it. In addition to probation, he was sentenced to 45 days of road cleanup and a year of domestic violence counseling.
Los Angeles police arrested Rodman on April 30 after they were called to the Intercontinental Hotel in Century City, where he had struck his girlfriend. The woman suffered injuries to her arms, officials said.
Rodman, 47, was booked at the Van Nuys jail but later released on $50,000 bail. He entered counseling before authorities charged him in May.
Two other counts -- of brandishing a deadly weapon and trying to dissuade a witness, his girlfriend -- were dropped by city prosecutors as part of the plea bargain.
A spokesman for City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo said Rodman would be allowed to do his community service in Florida, where he is living.
