Readers React: Leave Canadian tar sands oil in the ground

Share

To the editor: Running 830,000 barrels of oil per day from Alberta, Canada, to Texas was a bad idea even when the State Department somehow concluded it would have little effect on carbon emissions; it is now clear that that conclusion was way off. (“Keystone XL could mean more carbon emissions than estimated, study says,” Aug. 11)

This oil needs to stay in the ground, and the arguments to the contrary fly in the face of all reasonable environmental and economic conclusions.

We are doing ourselves no favors by refusing to transition from a carbon-based economy.

President Obama will have history on his side if he follows science and his conscience on this.
